Smriti Irani Calls on Rahul Gandhi to Support Women's Quota

Smriti Irani, national general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to back the immediate implementation of the proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies. Her remarks came during a press conference on Sunday, following Gandhi's recent comments aimed at empowering women during his 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' programme in Pune.

During the outreach event, Gandhi encouraged young women to 'smash patriarchy', describing them as integral to India's strength. While applauding such sentiments, Irani asserted that Gandhi should turn his words into action by supporting the swift implementation of the women’s reservation law.

"Since a key Congress leader has expressed support for women and their leadership, I appeal to him to endorse Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative for the timely enactment of the bill that promises 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament," Irani stated.

In addition to her call for legislative support, Irani challenged the Congress party to host a full rendition of the national song, Vande Mataram, including verses that invoke Goddess Durga, at their headquarters. She remarked, “Given that Gandhi has referenced religious themes, I request him to ensure the full rendition, as the verses contain significant cultural and spiritual references.”

Irani highlighted the BJP's criticism of the Congress party for historically singing only the initial two stanzas of Vande Mataram at their events, labelling this practice as an affront to the national song. She underscored Hindu traditions that honour women, articulating, “Our religious ethos emphasises that where women are revered, divinity is present."

The BJP has argued that Gandhi's support for women’s rights should be accompanied by tangible actions, suggesting a political manoeuvre to challenge the Congress party’s commitment to these issues.

Gandhi, addressing the audience in Pune, spoke against societal norms that he claims hinder women's progress. He referred to a mindset rooted in historical texts, namely the Manusmriti, which he said perpetuates female subordination. Citing specific passages, he pointed out that such attitudes foster a culture of violence and harassment against women. Gandhi insisted that a significant percentage of women encounter various forms of harassment in society.

The discourse surrounding women's rights and empowerment continues to galvanise attention from various political factions within India. Irani's statements seem to pivot the ongoing dialogue towards actionable commitments regarding women's representation in governance. As the debate intensifies, both leaders are expected to maintain their focus on this pivotal issue as it unfolds in the lead-up to impending elections.
