Fire at Amravati Hospital Claims Lives of Three Newborns

In a tragic incident in Maharashtra's Amravati district, a fire erupted early on Monday morning in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women's Hospital, resulting in the deaths of three newborn infants. The blaze reportedly began at around 3.30 am on the hospital's third floor, where approximately 39 newborns were being treated.

The initial investigation suggests that the fire was triggered by an explosion from a ventilator. Upon noticing the flames, medical staff quickly mobilised to evacuate the affected infants and provide immediate assistance. Six newborns were subsequently transferred to a super-speciality hospital for further treatment.

Confirming the fatalities, Badnera Member of the Legislative Assembly Ravi Rana stated that three newborns died as a result of the fire. Former Amravati Member of Parliament Navneet Rana has announced her intention to visit the hospital in light of the tragedy.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was made aware of the incident and briefed on the ongoing response efforts. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule confirmed that a thorough inquiry into the causes of the fire has been commissioned. He stated, “I have ordered a complete inquiry into this incident. Treatment of those who are injured is underway.”

Minister Bawankule assured the families of the deceased that the government is committed to providing support and assistance while maintaining communication with district administration officials regarding the investigation.

The recent incident has raised significant concerns regarding fire safety protocols within hospitals, especially in critical care units housing vulnerable infants. There is an emphasis on ascertaining whether proper fire safety measures were implemented and adhered to, preventing a repetition of similar tragedies in the future.

Notably, this incident follows a past tragedy in January 2021, when ten newborns lost their lives in a fire at the NICU of a district hospital in Bhandara during the Covid-19 pandemic. This has intensified scrutiny over the safety regulations in place at such facilities.
