Gautam Adani's Meeting with Karnataka CM Raises Political Concerns

BENGALURU: Gautam Adani, the Chairman of the Adani Group, met Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday morning at the Chief Minister's residence for approximately 30 minutes. Both parties characterised the encounter as a standard courtesy visit, yet it has raised concerns among some members of the Congress party.

Several senior Congress officials, wishing to remain anonymous, described the meeting as 'avoidable optics for DKS.' Although other party figures declined to comment, the response within Congress has been mixed. Chief Minister Shivakumar, addressing the media, confirmed that Adani had requested the appointment and emphasized that 'nothing was discussed' beyond formalities. He added that the Adani Group is already engaged in various projects within the state.

However, the unexpected nature of the visit caught many Congress workers and leaders off guard. Sources indicate that this is not the pair’s first meeting, as they have reportedly interacted on previous occasions.

The timing of the meeting has attracted particular scrutiny, especially as the Adani Group has emerged as the lowest bidder for a significant 16.75-kilometre twin-tunnel project aimed at connecting Hebbal in northern Bengaluru to Silk Board Junction in the south. This ambitious infrastructure corridor is slated to be constructed at a cost of Rs 22,267 crore and is designed to alleviate severe traffic congestion often experienced in the city.

While the bidding process is competitive, the proximity of this meeting to vital developments concerning the project has led to questions about the nature of the relationship between the Adani Group and the Karnataka government. Prior to meeting with Chief Minister Shivakumar, Adani visited the Art of Living ashram, where he met spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Political commentary surrounding the meeting has also been intense. R Ashoka, a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party, challenged Congress regarding Adani's ties to the ruling party. He referred to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's previous accusations regarding Adani's close connections to the BJP, contrasting those claims with what he characterises as the Karnataka government’s 'rollout of the red carpet' for the industrialist.

Ashoka questioned whether the Congress leadership had sanctioned the engagement with Adani and suggested that Chief Minister Shivakumar should advise Rahul Gandhi regarding this matter. He also took issue with the government’s plans for the Tunnel Road, alleging that it involves the acquisition of land from public parks and lakes to mitigate costs associated with acquiring private land. Ashoka has urged Rahul Gandhi to oppose any measures that might infringe on park or lake properties for project development.
