Indian Stocks Show Cautious Optimism Post Fed Rate Decision
Indian equity markets are expected to show a cautiously positive trend in the week ahead. Following the recent decision by the United States Federal Reserve to increase its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, market analysts are observing related economic indicators closely.
The Federal Reserve raised its policy rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, citing ongoing inflation concerns. The Fed has indicated that it may implement another rate hike of 25 basis points by December, potentially bringing the rate to between 4% and 4.25%. Officials have signalled a commitment to maintain this interest rate level through 2027, aiming to combat persistent inflationary pressures.
In the UK, the Bank of England opted to hold its policy rate steady at 3.75% while maintaining a hawkish approach due to similar inflation concerns. In contrast, the Bank of Japan increased its policy rate by 25 basis points, marking its highest level since 1995, now set at 1.25%.
Crude oil prices have seen a slight decline, with Brent crude easing by 1% last week to settle at around $104 per barrel. This reduction in oil prices provides a temporary reprieve for investors, although ongoing prices above $100 per barrel remain a challenge for both corporate margins and the current account balance in India.
This week will feature significant events and data releases, including speeches from United States Federal Reserve officials, as well as the US Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and initial jobless claims statistics. In India, the HSBC Flash PMI for September will also be closely monitored.
Amid these developments, while the equity markets started the week on a weaker note, they have begun to recover as domestic liquidity and investor sentiment improve. Many analysts recommend that investors keep a close eye on inflationary trends and global market movements as various factors come into play this week.
