Ujjain's Hanuman Idol Stands Firm Amid Relocation Efforts
Hanuman idol in Ujjain refuses to budge during relocation attempts, causing local devotion and scrutiny over its historical importance.

In a remarkable event that has garnered considerable local attention, a Hanuman idol in Ujjain, India, has remained immovable despite multiple attempts by authorities to relocate it for road widening as part of preparations for the Kumbh Mela 2028. The idol, situated at the ancient Hanuman temple, has resisted removal efforts over four consecutive days. Heavy machinery, including cranes and excavators, has been deployed, but to no avail.

Local authorities began their attempts to dislodge the idol in response to the widening of roads from Kantahal Chowk to Chhatri Chowk, essential for the upcoming religious festival. However, efforts have faced unexpected challenges, leading to speculation among residents about the idol's refusal to be moved. Video footage showing a large troop of monkeys arriving at the site has also added to the attention surrounding the event.

The temple itself has already undergone significant structural changes, with parts of the building demolished to facilitate the process. Local devotees have expressed their concerns, placing warning signs near the idol to hold the administration accountable should any damage occur during attempts to relocate it.

Archaeological experts have cited the idol's historical significance, claiming it could date back to the Bhoj era, approximately a thousand years ago, made of basalt rock. Dr. Raman Solanki, an archaeology expert from Vikram University, stated, "The idol's connection to the historical heritage of Ujjain is undeniable, and its removal should be approached with utmost care. Scientific testing is required to ascertain the precise age and condition of the idol."

Local priests and devotees maintain that the idol conveys a message of its desire to stay in its original place. They argue that the historical ties of this temple predate even the Revolt of 1857, further asserting that rather than moving the idol, a more fitting solution would be to reconstruct a grand temple in its current location.

To allay further risks, attempts to remove the idol using heavy machinery have been temporarily halted. Instead, authorities are collaborating with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to devise a careful strategy for its potential relocation informed by scientific assessments. The idol currently remains covered safely under a temporary tent while further scans and reports are conducted to ascertain its condition and the ground beneath it.

As the situation develops, local sentiment, historical sentiment, and administrative plans intertwine, keeping the focus on how to respect both the cultural heritage and the practical needs of urban development in Ujjain.
