Trump Calls for Canadian Firms to Relocate to Avoid Tariffs
Donald Trump demands Canadian companies move to the US to dodge new tariffs, escalating trade tensions between the two nations.

Donald Trump has intensified his trade dispute with Canada, calling on Canadian businesses to relocate to the United States in order to sidestep a new round of tariffs. His remarks, made via Truth Social, come in the wake of collapsing trade negotiations and the announcement of tariffs as high as 50 per cent on select Canadian goods, including dairy and lumber.

Trump's demand follows a statement from Canadian officials suggesting that the country is ready for an extensive trade conflict with the United States. In his post, Trump asserted, "Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately. Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U.S. Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!"

The tariffs, which are set to take effect in 2027, have prompted retaliatory measures from Canada, which has imposed similar tariffs on certain U.S. exports, including steel and aluminium.

Trump has expressed disdain for Canada as a trading partner, calling it one of America's worst offenders in trade relations, despite Canada being the second-largest trade partner for the U.S. The U.S. trade representative estimated that nearly $900 billion in trade occurs annually between the two nations. In his statements, Trump claimed, "One of the Worst Abusers is Canada," and added, "I don’t want Canadian cars, I don’t want Canadian parts, I don’t want Canadian anything. They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop."

While Trump cites his tariffs as crucial for protecting American manufacturing, many U.S. companies remain reliant on parts sourced from abroad, including Canada. Ford Motor Company had previously acknowledged the administration's tariff exemptions for certain vehicle components, highlighting the complexity of the issue.

The president's aggressive stance appears to signal a departure from any intent to negotiate, focusing instead on escalating his rhetoric against Canadian politicians such as Mark Carney and Doug Ford, the Ontario Premier. Recently, Trump also made headlines by ordering federal agencies to rebrand Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, a move that has drawn criticism.

Doug Ford has warned of the potential negative impact of a trade war on both economies, stating, “Everyone’s feeling bullied by President Trump, and this is the worst thing you could do for the American economy.” Ford described the situation as “something out of Saturday Night Live,” emphasising that no one would accept the name change from Lake Ontario.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew referred to Trump as weak and out of touch. He stated, “I think Donald Trump is very weak. I think America is weaker around the world today than it was a year ago. He’s about to get slaughtered in the midterms and the cost of living is the number one issue.”

Canadian officials announced further retaliatory tariffs last week. However, U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer indicated that the U.S. would respond strongly to any further Canadian reprisals, cautioning, “don’t retaliate.” He acknowledged concerns in Canada while maintaining that the U.S. would proceed with its trade policy as necessary.

As tensions continue, the future of U.S.-Canada trade relations remains precarious amidst escalating rhetoric and impending tariffs.
