Oil Prices Surge Past $107 Amid Heightened Geopolitical Tensions
Brent crude oil prices have exceeded $107 per barrel as conflicts in the Gulf region affect supply chains and market stability.

Oil prices have surged significantly, with Brent crude reaching $107.20 per barrel, marking a striking increase attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region. This rise follows recent incidents of attacks on oil tankers amidst the ongoing conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran.

On Thursday, Brent futures jumped from $105.26 to $107.20, while US West Texas Intermediate crude also spiked, surpassing $100 a barrel for the first time since May. The situation in the Gulf has remained precarious, largely due to heightened uncertainties surrounding shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for global oil transport.

Market analysts indicate that the recent development is deeply intertwined with fears of extended supply disruptions. PVM analyst John Evans noted, "The recent run-up in prices lays bare the market’s approach: this conflict will last longer than anticipated. If oil supply and exports are diminished, prices will remain elevated."

The surge in oil prices represents over a 50 per cent increase from the lows experienced in early July, when a temporary ceasefire was established. This recent spike is further compounded by statements from Iran indicating their military actions, including attacks on ten vessels in the region. Concurrently, the Iran-aligned Houthi faction's control over Yemen's Mocha port poses additional threats to the stability of maritime traffic in the Red Sea.

As concerns about fuel supplies mount, the ramifications extend beyond oil markets. Rising energy prices have intensified inflation fears in the United States, pushing petrol prices up to approximately $4.28 per gallon. This price increase impacts not only motorists but also contributes to higher costs for goods transported by truck.

The current market conditions have led traders to predict a nearly 70 per cent likelihood of a federal interest rate hike during the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting. This marks an increase from the 61 per cent probability observed just a day prior, as rising oil costs exacerbate inflationary pressures. While some officials, including US President Donald Trump, have advocated for lower interest rates, the persistent rise in oil prices presents a strong counterargument that policymakers must consider moving forward.
