ISRO Leadership Addresses Concerns Over Private Sector Involvement
Indian Space Research Organisation assures employees of its unchanged status amidst rising private sector participation in the space industry.

The Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr V. Narayanan, has clarified that the organisation is not undergoing privatisation. He spoke during the Bengaluru Space Expo, addressing concerns raised by some employees regarding the government's increasing focus on private sector partnerships in the space domain. Employee associations had previously sought formal clarification on how these shifts might affect ISRO's operations and workforce.

Dr Narayanan explained that reforms in the space sector were initiated six years ago with the intention of nurturing private industry involvement while growing the broader space ecosystem. He pointed out that private industry has played a crucial role in ISRO’s success, significantly impacting the manufacturing of launch vehicles.

“Whenever a PSLV or a GSLV is lifting off, don't think that everything is done by ISRO. Almost 80% of the budget is invested by Indian industries. Around 450 industries are working for us,” he noted.

The clarifications come during a time of heightened discussion regarding the government's strategy to enhance the role of private players within India's space sector. Employee groups from key ISRO centres have expressed a desire for greater clarity on implications for ISRO's future, particularly concerning recruitment, workforce retention, and maintaining essential capabilities.

Dr Narayanan indicated that India aims to significantly ramp up its launch capacity, estimating a need for approximately 50 launch vehicles annually. He emphasised that achieving such ambitious targets necessitates a cooperative framework involving both ISRO and domestic industries.

On the matter of privatisation, Narayanan firmly stated, “ISRO is not privatised.” In response to requests for a written statement detailing the agency's stance, he mentioned that addressing the concerns of the entire workforce, consisting of around 20,000 employees, would take precedence over responding to individual letters or groups.

His comments are part of ongoing efforts by ISRO's leadership to reassure staff that the expansion of private entity participation is designed to enhance the capabilities of India's national space agency and not to diminish it.
