Increased Shelling Tactics Heighten Struggles for Ukrainians
Intensified air raids in Ukraine are disrupting daily life and heightening civilian distress, as officials report a significant rise in attacks.

As the conflict continues, air raids in Ukraine have intensified, causing significant disruption to daily life. Residents are reporting increased anxiety and difficulty in securing basic needs. Olena Krakovska, a 42-year-old mother and shop owner in Kyiv, describes her workplace as a semblance of safety amidst the chaos. "I’m already in a bomb shelter. Air raid or not, I’m at work," she shared. The constant threat of air raids has turned daily routines into stressful experiences. Outside her shop, the sounds of sirens and explosions become a normal occurrence, with debris often raining down from the sky.

Since mid-August, the frequency and duration of air raids have escalated sharply. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on September 6 that these attacks aim to instill terror in Ukrainian communities. A report by UA.news indicates that air raids rose from five per week at the end of July to an alarming 34 in one week in late August. Each raid typically lasts longer and patrols daily life, affecting work, education, and transport.

The resurgence of air raids in September has led to further casualties. Just this past Monday, a six-hour bombing resulted in five deaths and 35 injuries, causing various fires across Kyiv. Commuting has become perilous, with public transportation often delayed or rerouted due to safety protocols during air raids. Krakovska noted that, "people are kept awake all night, leading to a ripple effect across daily schedules."

Amidst these challenges, many Ukrainians strive to maintain a sense of normalcy. The onset of the academic year brought renewed worries for Krakovska regarding her sons’ education, as she decided to have them study online, fearing for their safety in school basements. She expressed concern over her children’s engagement, highlighting that distractions, such as video games, have become more prevalent.

Krakovska’s journey to work has morphed into an ordeal. Previously a 45-minute subway ride, commuting now involves waiting for long periods in overcrowded stations, especially during air raids that halt transport across the Dnipro River. "One day, I waited nearly three hours for the subway while worrying about my phone battery and my kids’ safety," she recounted.

Her shopping habits have also altered drastically. With many supermarkets facing shortages due to destroyed supply warehouses, Krakovska finds herself rushing to buy essentials from smaller vendors. Olha Bondar, who operates a fruit and vegetable stand, noted that her sales have increased but stressed that the war affects her earnings significantly. Bondar, who fled her hometown of Volnovakha ahead of Russian advances in 2022, shared, "Most of the town lies in ruins. It's heart-wrenching."

According to Bondar, some relatives remain in Volnovakha, insisting on pro-Moscow perspectives, which complicates familial ties amid ongoing hostilities. "They blame Kyiv and the West for all the death and destruction," she commented.

In contrast, residents with more resources are seeking refuge in the suburbs, opting for houses with better safety provisions. Roman, a Kyiv software engineer, shared his struggles finding suitable housing, noting that many places do not allow pets. He mentioned feeling trapped in his apartment, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by families trying to secure safe living conditions amidst the war.

Ukrainians are employing a combination of resilience and resourcefulness to navigate these trying times, but the increased shelling continues to weigh heavily on their daily lives.
