Fatal Fire on Cargo Ship at Qingdao Port Claims at Least 25 Lives

A significant fire broke out on a foreign-flagged cargo ship at Qingdao port in eastern China, leading to the deaths of at least 25 individuals, according to state media reports. The incident occurred while the ship was docked for repairs at the Beihai Shipbuilding Company.

At the time of the fire, there were 42 crew members aboard the vessel. Twelve people were successfully evacuated, while five others sustained injuries and were hospitalised in stable condition, as reported by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV).

The fire erupted around 11:15 am local time, but details surrounding its cause and whether firefighting efforts successfully extinguished the blaze remain unclear. The vessel, identified as the Ocean Melody, is registered under the Liberian flag, a status that classifies it as a foreign-flagged ship.

In response to the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered immediate search-and-rescue operations. He emphasised the necessity to locate any missing persons and the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the incident. Premier Li Qiang echoed these sentiments, urging for the rescue of any trapped individuals and the provision of medical care to the injured.

Furthermore, President Xi called for “profound lessons” to be learned from this event, insisting that all regions and relevant departments conduct thorough investigations to eliminate fire hazards in the future. As the situation develops, authorities are focused on preventing any potential secondary disasters resulting from the initial fire.

Witnesses have reported thick smoke rising from the ship, which has heightened concerns about safety procedures in place at the busy port, known as a major shipping hub on China's northeastern coast. As investigations continue, officials will likely review protocols to ensure such incidents are mitigated in the future.
