Coco Gauff overcomes match points to defeat Mirra Andreeva, advancing to face Elena Rybakina in the US Open semi-finals. Top seeds prevail.

Coco Gauff has advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open after a thrilling match in which she saved two match points against Mirra Andreeva. The fourth seed fought back from a set down to emerge victorious with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 against the unseeded Russian.

The quarter-final encounter at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center showcased Gauff’s resilience. After a disappointing first set in which she struggled to find her rhythm, the 22-year-old rallied in the second. Gauff was initially overwhelmed by Andreeva’s aggressive play but managed to save two match points during a tense tie-break.

Inspired by compatriot Frances Tiafoe, who had achieved a comeback victory earlier in the tournament, Gauff’s determination was on full display. "We all want to do well in front of this crowd... I just wanted to leave the court without any regrets," she commented after the match.

Gauff’s victory sets up a semi-final clash against Elena Rybakina, the newly crowned world number one. Rybakina secured her spot in the final four by defeating Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, marking her first time reaching the top of the rankings.

The semi-final line-up is significant as it features all top four seeds for the first time in a Grand Slam since 2009. This includes Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, who will face third seed Jessica Pegula.

Despite a shaky start, Gauff's performance improved significantly as the match progressed. Her victory is a testament to her mental strength, having previous struggled with the pressure of competing in front of home crowds. Gauff stated, "I don't have that fear of disappointing them. I'm just using them and knowing that when I step on this court, they're still going to have my back."

Elena Rybakina, on the other hand, faced a challenge against Zheng but managed to flip the momentum in her favour. Ranked 121st at the beginning of the tournament, Zheng's journey to the quarter-finals included overcoming two significant matches against Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek. Despite her defeat, Zheng’s performance has placed her on the radar for future tournaments as she rises in the rankings.

As the tournament progresses, Gauff and Rybakina's upcoming match is highly anticipated, with both players demonstrating exceptional skill and resilience throughout the event. Gauff’s ability to recover in tough situations has clearly set the stage for an exciting semi-final clash in New York. Fans eagerly await what promises to be another intense battle on the court.
