Aryna Sabalenka Overcomes Linda Noskova to Reach US Open Semi-Finals
Aryna Sabalenka battles back against Linda Noskova in a thrilling quarter-final to keep her US Open title defence alive.

Aryna Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam single champion, has successfully advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open 2026 after a remarkable comeback against Linda Noskova. The two-time defending champion faced her toughest challenge yet in this tournament, trailing at crucial moments before ultimately securing a victory.

The quarter-final match, played at Flushing Meadows, saw Sabalenka taken to a deciding set for the first time in the competition. Initially, she found herself behind 4-2 in the third set and then 2-0 in the tie-break. However, she rallied to claim a nail-biting 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 7-6 (10-7) win, marking her 19th consecutive victory at the tournament since her triumph in 2023.

This achievement places Sabalenka as the first woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to reach six consecutive semi-finals at the US Open. This performance is crucial for maintaining her position as the world number one, but her ranking could be affected depending on the result of Elena Rybakina's upcoming match against Zheng Qinwen.

In a post-match interview, Sabalenka expressed her feelings about the match, stating, "I'm speechless right now. I was pushing to the limit in this match, especially in the third set. I honestly thought that that's it, the match is over, but probably that's what helped me to feel loose and go after my shots."

The match began with Sabalenka establishing an early lead, breaking Noskova's service game and racing to a 5-2 advantage. However, she faced difficulties in maintaining momentum, as Noskova fought back and forced a tie-break. Despite four double faults throughout the match, Sabalenka's resilience shone through as she triumphed in the decisive moments.

Noskova, despite the loss, demonstrated impressive form, hitting more winners and fewer unforced errors compared to Sabalenka. This defeat halts her impressive run of 11 consecutive wins at Grand Slam events, though she showcased commendable skill and determination throughout the match.

In the semi-finals, Sabalenka is set to face Jessica Pegula, who herself displayed remarkable tenacity in her quarter-final match against compatriot Emma Navarro. Pegula defeated Navarro 3-6 6-4 6-3, ensuring her place in the semi-finals for the third consecutive year.

Pegula's performance was marked by her overcoming a slow start, managing to navigate through 24 break points against her during the match. She noted the challenges she faced, saying, "I was fighting a lot of demons out there today," but her ability to recover and refocus has kept her hopes of becoming world number one alive.

The upcoming semi-finals promise to deliver high-stakes tennis as both players aim for a place in the final, with Sabalenka pursuing her third successive title at the US Open. The excitement surrounding these matches underscores the intensity and rivalry present in women's tennis today.
