Operation Brahma: India acts as first responder, sends humanitarian aid to earthquake-hit Myanmar
The first tranche of humanitarian aid from India arrives at the Yangon Airport in earthquake-hit Myanmar on March 29, 2025.
Prime Minister Modi has conveyed his condolences at the loss of lives.
Acting as the first responder, India launched Operation Brahma to send humanitarian aid to Myanmar on Saturday (March 29, 2025), a day after the Southeast Asian nation was hit by a devastating earthquake.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) the first tranche which reached Yangon airport comprised 15 tonnes of relief material, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines. The relief material was formally handed over to Yangon’s Chief Minister U Soe Thein by India’s Ambassador Abhay Thakur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, spoke with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and conveyed his condolences at the loss of lives.

“Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour. Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, search & rescue teams are being expeditiously dispatched to the affected areas as part of #OperationBrahma,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on social media platform X.

Shortly after the earthquake struck, Prime Minister Modi had offered all possible assistance and asked the authorities to be on standby.

“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he said on X on Friday.

A powerful earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand on Friday (March 28, 2025), leaving a trail of destruction. According to media reports, over 1,000 people are believed to have died in Myanmar while thousands have been injured. The toll is likely to rise as search and rescue operations at sites of collapsed buildings continue for the second day.

Myanmar’s second largest city Mandalay was the epicentre of the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake. The impact was also felt in Thailand’s capital Bangkok, where a multi-storey building which was under construction collapsed.

According to news reports, strong tremors were also felt in parts of India, including Meghalaya and Manipur, as well as in Bangladesh and China.
