Indian women boxers have made the country proud yet again by creating history and winning four gold medals at the just-concluded Women's World Boxing Championship. The championship, which took place at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi from March 16-23, saw the participation of 324 boxers from 65 countries, including several Olympic medallists. Nikhat Zareen, who won gold for a second consecutive year, defeated Nguyem Thi Tam of Vietnam in the 50kg category. Lovlina Borgohain, who had won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, won her maiden World Championship gold in the 75kg category against Caitlin Parker of Australia. Nitu Ghanghas, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, won gold in the 48kg category by defeating Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg of Mongolia. Three-time Asian medallist Saweety Boora won her gold in the 81kg category by defeating China's Wang Lina. With her win, Nikhat became only the second Indian to win multiple gold medals at the World Championships (2022 and 2023) after Mary Kom, who has six World Championships gold medals to her name during her illustrious career (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018). The Indian boxers not only won the gold medals but also received prize money of $100,000 (INR 82.7 lakhs) for their remarkable achievement after their victory put India at the top of the gold medal tally at the Women's World Boxing Championship, making the country proud of their outstanding performance.
